Bicol Autonomy

Dr. Jose Abueva at the 2nd Bicol Forum at the USI Auditorium, March 26, 2009

Two days ago, I attended the Forum on Bicol Autonomy organized by Commodore Dante Jimenez of the Mariners Polytechnic Colleges and VACC fame. I was drawn into attendance by my own curiousity and I did not want to pass up seeing Dr. Jose Abueva again.

I was only supposed to attend as an observer... a "miron". However, I found myself suddenly elevated to become a reactor to the resource speakers representing the Academe.

My take on it is quite simple. I am all for Bicol Autonomy, in the same manner that I am for the parliamentary form of government and I am for Federalism. I feel that it is great that we are starting to talk about it and discussing it in forums.

However, before we even start talking about autonomy I think it should be clear what the proposals are. It is important to answer the 5 Ws and more importantly the 1 H first.

As I have pointed out -- are the Bicolanos prepared for this?

It seems a long way to go for this to reach mainstream advocacy, well, at least the first step was made towards this long journey to autonomy.

I am also for Bicol Autonomy. HOWEVER, a law that prevents political dynasty should be passed before this idea of Bicol Autonomy be discussed.

As we all know political dynasty is deeply entrenched in Bicol Politics,,,,,i.e. Villafuerte's, Alfelors, Fuentebella's . What will happen if for example from the Governor down to Baranggay Captains are all Villafuertes or Alfelors?...There will be no checks and Balance...There is always the temptation to abuse power..

tama ika!!!!....dapat usad sana kada pamilya ana maging lider o kandidato para maging lider...kin minsan kaya agko usad na pamilya na dawa uda man data dahil kana apelyido, sige ana kandidato!!!! ginigibo ng career ana pag-pulitika...hehehe...ngani nonokoy...hehehe

Speaking from being a member of a family that is in Bicol Politics, we all know that these political families subject themselves to the electoral process. It is not their fault to be interested to be elected in public office. You should make the appeal to the electorate not to elect such members of political dynasties if you want.

Actually, the issue of political dynasties is an age-old issue. But, even the US have political families engaged in the electoral process, like the Kennedys, the Bushes, the Clintons... etc...

These political dynasties have passed the crucible of elections. I just think that blaming it on the political dynasties is misdirected. What we need is electoral reform.

medyo deceiving po sa gatingay ana statement mo pong political dynasty in the U.S.....When Pres. Bill Clinton was the president, I can't recall any of his family being in an elected position....Maybe si Bush but the only elcted Bush at that time of his presidency is Jeb Bush- the gov. of Florida.

I do agree that a major changes in the electoral process should be made!!! especially with regards to poltical dynasty....

isi mo po kaya, it is VERY easy to say that it is the voters who are choosing the elected officials and I do agree BUT everyone knows that the matter on how the election is being done in the Philippines nowadays, if you don't have money, there is no way you can be elected. Vote-buying is always very rampant during elections---does that show the true will of the people?....not really. There are a lot of qualified candidates for various position but because it is very hard to go against families that are deeply entrenched in the local poticial landscape, there is no way they can win.

kaya po mas magayon kin Usad sana kada pamilya ana dapat mag-kandidato sa kada distrito para matawan man sa pagkakataon su iba na uda masyadong kwarta.

Just for your information though, I do support Mayor Madel Alfelor...I think she is one of the best mayor the city had ever had....

This only my opinion and It is not my intention to malign anybody

i agree to ms. peachy if u have concerns about the political dynasty here in BICOL u should have appeal to the electorate... and besides if u think that if u have no money u cant win here, well as u said that this is the election process here in the philippines and i dont think u can do anything about it...

ALFELOR's and VILLAFUERTEs have the right to be in the position because they were voted by the people not of their moneys but because they are capable to serve the province.. nasa UGAT yan.. =0

KUNG SINASABI MO NA AGKO MAN MGA CAPABLE MAGRUN FOR THE POSITION KAYA LANG DA SINTABO IKA NA MISMO NAGSABI NA AROG KAN A POLITIKA SADI PILIPINAS..

i still salute the ALFELORS and VILLAFUERTES!!! go go go!

i agree that a political dynasty law in the philippines should be enacted to prevent certain family from monopolizing the positions in the gov't. nawawala ang checks and balance pag puro iisang pamilya ang nasa posisyon.

that is one of the reason why the country is lagging in terms of economic development but first in graft and corruption in the overnment.

in iriga alone, although people are not talking abt. it publicly but it is well-known that most of the city government infrastructure projects are being contracted by a contruction company owned by the husband of the mayor. That is illegal according to the LAW!!!...but who is going to complain abt. it?...nobody because , the alfelors are well-entrenched in the gov't that the case will go nowhere.

what will happen to iriga when mayor madel term ends?...nonokoy(manny jr.) for mayor?....i applaud mayor madels performance but i don't think all of the alfelors are capable of being a good leader.

villafuertes----we all know that luis villafuerte sr. is the grandfather of all the trapos in the philippines---and that is what the philippines need to get rid of trapos.....l-ray though is a good governor so sorry sir nancing, i have to vote for l-ray...hehehe

i soo think that the ALFELOR's are all good leaders.. imagine??? they have no issues about being disrespectful of their parents or whatsoever.. we should have UNITY!

if u want u can run publicly to prove your worth..

how much did the villafuerte's gave to u in order for u to defend them?? hahaha! funny! u know wat? all the VILLAFUERTE's are snakes and materialistics!

i still salute the ALFELOR's for their UNITY and HUMBLENESS!

to the ALFELOR's GOODLUCK! :)
